Hot Stove Report

Normally the beginning of March signifies a reduction in trades as general managers and BBB staff ready for a new season, although this year seems a bit different. Instead of an offseason grades article, it is safe to say the trade winds, which have effectively turned into a hurricane, are still blowing for potential buyers and sellers. With the insane amount of GM firings over the offseason, an influx of new, gung-ho GM’s have turned the winter leagues into an extended winter meeting of sorts. From the sounds of it, the trades are far from over. Here are the grumblings in each division around the league.

AL EAST

The AL EAST has been somewhat active on the trade front – although most of the clubs seem as if they are heading into Spring Training with the rosters they have now. The YANKEES have been somewhat quiet – although they are still openly shopping 2B Cano, SS Escobar, and SP Bedard. Sources say there were preliminary talks with the Diamondbacks about a Bedard/Zumaya deal – but they ultimately fell through as AZ was limited in what the Yanks are searching for, 2B/3B and a young starter. The RAYS showed limited interest in Arizona’s backup C Brett Cecil before they brought in John Hester from the Rangers. The RAYS seem set – they most likely will fill their last roster spot internally. The ORIOLES have been shopping OF Aaron Rowand, and would move 2B Brian Roberts for the right price – although it seems unlikely that these players will be moved before the all-star break. The BLUE JAYS and RED SOX have both been pretty quiet since the offseason began – although it is no secret almost any veteran on the BLUE JAYS could probably be easily pried from the boys in Toronto.

AL CENTRAL

The new INDIANS GM has been very busy recently, bringing in the pieces he feels are fit for the team. The INDIANS are thought to be heavily shopping CL Joe Nathan – a player that will most likely be in another location before Spring Training wraps up. It is unclear what Cleveland is asking for in return. Both the Twins and the Tigers seem relatively set, although a source claims some teams have inquired about several of the Tigers young guns.

AL WEST

The BBB champion RANGERS have been active this off season – most recently bringing in studly closer Cla Meredith. After a brash of deals, it seems as if the Rangers have come close to finishing. 3B Hank Blalock and LF/CF David Murphy are being shopped heavily. It seems Blalock would fit well on a team like the Braves – but the price might be too high for Atlanta. Murphy would be a great defensive replacement in the National League on the Diamondbacks or Marlins – but chances of a deal coming together seem slim.

Marlins Pre-Season Review
Written by Administrator
Saturday, 17 March 2007

The Marlins were pretty sore of losing to the Rangers 4 games to 2 in last year's World Series so GM Josh Bounds has been busy all offseason improving every area of the organization. After numerous trades and free agency signings this is what the team should look like come April.

Starting Rotation

SP- Clay Buchholz
SP- Nick Adenhart
SP- Gio Gonzalez
SP- Kyle Winters
SP- Kyle Kendrick
SP- Shane Lindsay

This rotation is vastly improved over last year's team. Yes the Marlins did trade away the Cy Young winner Verlander but overall the team now has 5 guys that could be aces on many teams in the league, and Lindsay would be the wildcard. This rotation looks to be second to none besides the Twin's rotation of course.

Bullpen

Pat Misch
Matt Guerrier
Chad Qualls
Michael Wuertz
Damaso Marte
Rick VandenHurk
Matt Lindstrom

Again, the bullpen is another area vastly improved this offseason. Free Agency was full of talent to help improve a bunch of bullpens and this was the main focus of the Marlins organization this offseason. The team is really trying to cut down on the 1 run losses this next year.
